Concepts

Standard Form

VisualCoefficients stare at you directly. The y-intercept is hiding in plain sight.

Algebray=ax2+bx+cy = ax^2 + bx + c. Here cc is the y-intercept.

y=ax2+bx+cy = ax^2 + bx + c

Vertex Form

VisualThe vertex (h,k)(h,k) sits right in the equation. Drag the red point — watch h and k update live.

Algebray=a(x−h)2+ky = a(x-h)^2 + k. Vertex at (h,k)(h,k). Axis of symmetry: x=hx=h.

y=a(x−h)2+ky = a(x-h)^2 + k

Factored Form

VisualThe roots are the equation's gifts — they appear as constants.

Algebray=a(x−r1)(x−r2)y = a(x-r_1)(x-r_2). Roots at x=r1,r2x=r_1, r_2. Axis of symmetry: x=r1+r22x=\tfrac{r_1+r_2}{2}.

y=a(x−r1)(x−r2)y = a(x-r_1)(x-r_2)

Discriminant

VisualA crystal ball under the radical — it tells you how many x-intercepts exist before you find them.

AlgebraΔ=b2−4ac\Delta = b^2 - 4ac. Positive: two roots. Zero: one (repeated). Negative: none (real).

Δ=b2−4ac\Delta = b^2 - 4ac
